Tatyana Is The Nigger Of The World
Too late, Pig Fanciers -- Jimmy (see yesterday's post) got funded. Took one day. One of the Tatyanas is funded too, I'm happy to say. The others are still waiting patiently in line. Got an extra $25.00 handy? I already spent my allowance for the week on Jimmy.By the way, I usually invest in women. It's not a personal idiosyncrasy - I just believe in their empowerment. Women in the developing world have an even tougher time than the guys. And they get more screwed (not literally) by the power structure. For instance, I read that in the least developed countries, nearly twice as many women over age 15 can't read or write as compared to men. Why is that? You tell me.
Here's a good one: Women do two thirds of the world's work, produce half the world's food, and yet get only ten percent of its income. Why is that?
So my bias is towards empowering women economically by giving them credit. Mine. What's your bias?
I made an exception for Jimmy though, because he's a primary school teacher, and we have to help him keep that job. Education is one of the big gifts. Helping an educated, intelligent, and dedicated guy in that job is worth a shift in my policy.
By the way, in case you don't remember, the incendiary title of this post comes from a 1972 song by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. So before you start shooting - read the lyrics here.. .

There is another reason you should invest in women entrepreneurs: it makes a lot of business and social sense:
- women generally run their business more efficiently, therefore the loan has a higher social impact
- women generally use the increased profit that results from the loan to a larger extend to increase the standard of living of the family
- women generally have a lower default ratio, thereby making it statistically a less risky investment
- by empowering women, the standard of living of a family increases more than by loaning to men. As a result, violence in the family goes down more. As a result, overall divorce/separation rates go down more. As a result, families have a higher standard of living. For once, the vicious cycle pulls people out of trouble instead of putting them deeper into the mud...
Good words, Ramon.
I would also suggest that us men generally tend to be reactionary rather than thoughtfully deliberate about what we do. Before anyone jumps on me for that, let me add that even those of us that ponder probably tend to ponder after the fact. Many of us are fixers rather than planners. We chase rabbits every chance we get.
That doesn't mean we are shiftless and irresponsible with businesses, just not always a good gamble. I wouldn't invest in a business with me as the entrepeneur. I'd spend it all on tires or guitars or something.
Oh, by the way. I was surprised that no one has cringed over the "N" word. And, Pig, I pulled out the old "Sometime in New York" vinyl and listened to that song, nay, the whole album. Still as visceral as it was more than 30 years ago.
