The Pondering Pig Sets Forth

Patrushka and the Pondering Pig (say, aren't they friends of the Captain and Tennille?) are hitching up their little gypsy cart and heading west, out to Penn's Woods to see if they can find a little town where talking pigs are welcomed, where there is corn and slops for all, where they can tend their bees while the peace comes dropping slow, and where all their beatnik friends can come riding up in the evening for jawing and haw-haw-hawing by the fire over great mugs of roast cider.

They'll be back next Sunday, God willing. So stand by - Old Pig returns February 5.

I'd like to see you roast cider. Just try putting cider on a spit over the fire. Or is this some delicacy prepared in a way I am not familiar with?

Nobody roasts cider like I roast cider. It's kind of like Hot Buttered Rum -- except it's cider and there's no butter in it. If there was butter in it, then it would be apple butter. But there's not - so it's roast cider? Is that clear?

Roasting cider can happen without a roaring fire and spit. it would require a dish or pan in an oven, and a medium-low temperature, 300 or so, for a prolonged period, say an hour or so. If all you want is hot juice, get a frozen can from the A&P or Kroger, mix it, put in the microwave for 3 minutes, and quaff the bugger.

But me? I don't know. Roasting anything just starts my appetite to cranking and my salivary glands to a-drippin'. Roast pig is definitely not on the menu. But, just maybe, roast Cheerios would work (smothered in chicken gravy and served with okra?)

Ewwwwww! Okay, no roasting cheerios for me. But perhaps roasted Special K? Or roasted peanut butter puffins?

Well, dear Nitsa. At least you recognize it as wisdom. For that I am appreciative
