When We Were Free As Birds

I've been spending a lot of time lately with my three characters, Paulie and Sylvie and Walrus, even though you don't see much progress on the blog. The story is going slower than it did because I actually have to think about what's going to happen in the middle and the end of the story. I have to ponder about the flapper girl and the girl on the merry-go-round, and I have to read up on stuff I need to understand so the story will feel real.

The Thrillseeking Three are starting to come alive in my mind. If I give them phony dialogue, they complain and won't leave me alone until I change it. If I try to make them little pawns to advance my plot they notice right away and screech at me. So I have to throw out a day's work and start over.

But mainly, I've been thinking about what it was like to have really tight friends like my three characters are. Pals, you know? Like the guys I roomed with and adventured with through some of the most eventful years of my life. I wish I still had some pals like that.

Free As A Bird captures that ache so well. Apologies to Hector and the Station Agent over at The Walrus Speaks. I'm not muscling in on their territory, believe me! In fact, if you like the Beatles and haven't visited their site, hop over there as soon as you watch Free As A Bird again. But watch the video first. It provides critical information.

It sounds a little like you are writing what you are seeing and feeling while watching a daydream unfolding in your mind - when you are not the total boss-mind of the daydream, as would normally be the case.

I’m thinking here of your saying, “If I try to make them little pawns to advance my plot they notice right away and screech at me. So I have to throw out a day's work and start over.”

It is interesting how you write by a firsthand feeling of the emotional states of the characters in this adventure, but I guess this is the way good writers have learned to proceed.

Thanks for answering my recent question regarding your method of writing, with this blog entry.

I made an attempt at viewing the U-Tube, however it takes forever to download using a Dial-up connection – so I gave up about halfway through.

I see it, pig. I see the free birds.

The first time I saw this video, a vid made over that old audio recording, it made me tear up a little bit. How could such old and trusted friends go so far wrrong?

I guess history shows that they really did remain friends until the end, though maybe a little less close than they were in, say, '64.

Funny how, when you look back on life, it really does look like that choppy, constantly moving camera in the "Birds" vid. Well, it does to me anyhow.

We all shine on.

The Beatles did not compose their own music, did you all know that? No, God wrote it, and they just went limp and let God use them.

Paul said of his first meeting with John, July 6, 1957:

"When two saints meet it is a humbling experience."

I love the video--it brought back memories--of my friends & life back then--when we were free as birds, or, at least thought we were-- Pat

Their music really seemed to be coming from the angels sometimes. Those harmonies! Even years afterward, like on 'Free As a Bird' - it's like angel music. Those bad Rolling Stones, on the the other hand, made their music "At His Satanic Majesty's Request" - or so they liked to pretend.

Crmmp2001, thanks for dropping by! Have you seen C3PO around lately? Actually, Pat - you gave me quite a start with your note - I was thinking about the characters in my story when you wrote checked in. For an instant I thought the note came from Pat Nichols - the original Sunshine of the early chapters of the story. Then I remembered - Pat died in Santa Cruz a number of years ago. So she can't drop by whenever she wants.
